    WHERE: Queensbridge Park

41 Ave Bridge Plaza, Vernon Blvd and East River

    GENRE: Jazz

DESCRIPTION: Dianne Reeves is the pre-eminent jazz vocalist in the world today. As a result of her virtuosity, improvisational prowess and unique jazz and R&B stylings, Dianne has received five Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album and an honorary doctorate of music from Julliard. Dianne’s magical, timeless voice, exceptional personality and the sheer force of her performance mark her as a captivating world-class artist. In what is her first album in more than five years, the Grammy Award winning Beautiful Life is a soul-jazz classic. Produced by Terri Lyne Carrington and featuring artists such as Gregory Porter, Robert Glasper, Lalah Hathaway and Esperanza Spalding, Dianne’s arsenal of talents is richly on display in each and every song on Beautiful Life. Adored by audiences and critics alike throughout the world, Dianne Reeves is a natural wonder not to be missed.

DJ Greg Caz has been spinning around New York since the early 1990s. He made a name for himself during his long stint at Black Betty (R.I.P.) in Williamsburg, where he co-hosted Brazilian Beat Sundays – a raucous DJ night of 1970s Brazilian dance music that inspired two mix CDs, Baile Funk, Vols. 1 & 2. Caz caught the “sweet sickness” of record collecting at a young age and owns crates and crates of funk, soul, rare grooves, reggae, jazz, golden-era hip hop, Latin music, ’70s soft rock and African music. He has long been a resident DJ at Nublu in the East Village, and recently provided lyric translations for the reissue of four Marcos Valle albums on Light in the Attic records. He has appeared in London, Brazil, Germany, Austria, Scotland, Ireland, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington DC, Chicago, Montreal and elsewhere.

ARTIST/EVENT: Complexions Contemporary Ballet / Carolyn Dorfman Dance

    WHERE: Central Park SummerStage

72 St & Central Park West

    GENRE: Dance

DESCRIPTION: It is artistic directors Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson’s lifelong appreciation for the artistic and aesthetic appeal of the multicultural that forms the cornerstone of Complexions Contemporary Ballet’s singular approach to reinventing dance. Founded in 1994, Complexions’ groundbreaking mix of methods, styles, cultures has created an entirely new and exciting vision of human movement over the past 20 years. The company’s foremost innovation is that dance should be about removing boundaries, not reinforcing them. Whether it be the limiting traditions of a single style, period, venue, or culture, Complexions transcends them all, creating an open, continually evolving form of dance that reflects the movement of our world—and all its constituent cultures—as an interrelated whole. Together, Rhoden and Richardson have created in Complexions an institution that embodies its historical moment, a sanctuary where those passionate about dance can celebrate its past while simultaneously building its future. In the 21 years since its inception, the company has bore witness to a world that is becoming more fluid, more changeable, and more culturally interconnected than ever before—in other words, a world that is becoming more and more like Complexions itself.

Carolyn Dorfman Dance connects life and dance in bold, athletic and dramatic works by Carolyn Dorfman and nationally renowned choreographers. The company’s ten multi-ethnic and stunning dancers tap their unique talents to present high-energy and technically demanding dance that unleashes the powerful storytelling and imagery of its visionary creator. This distinctive combination takes audiences on intellectual and emotional journeys that ultimately illuminate and celebrate the human experience. This is contemporary dance that moves you to think, feel, laugh, cry and engage.

    ARTIST/EVENT: Lyfe Jennings

    WHERE: Queensbridge Park

41 Ave Bridge Plaza, Vernon Blvd and East River

    GENRE: R&B/Soul

DESCRIPTION: Lyfe Jennings (born Chester Jennings in Toledo, Ohio) is an African American R&B and soul singer-songwriter, record producer, and instrumentalist. He plays the guitar, bass, and piano which he integrates into his music. Jennings began singing at a young age in a Toledo church choir. He later joined a group called The Dotsons with two of his cousins and his older brother, Jay. The group separated in the early 1990s, and Jennings rediscovered music and started a music program at an Ohio prison where he was serving a ten-year sentence on an arson-related charge. He has cited Erykah Badu’s 1997 album Baduizm as one of the reasons for his rediscovery. Jennings was released from prison in December 2002 and started to pursue a solo career in music. In January 2003, he performed in Harlem at the Showtime at The Apollo. The same year, he also independently released his first EP, What Is Love. To further pursue his career, Jennings moved to New York City where he performed at rapper Nelly’s concert at Radio City Music Hall, at an NAACP convention where he performed an original song called “Thank God for the NAACP”, and at the Cafeteria in Chelsea, Manhattan during the blackout on August 14. He signed with Columbia Records and released his debut album Lyfe 268-192 (268-192 was his inmate number) in August 2004. His first single was Stick Up Kid, which didn’t see much sucess until after the album was released. The album featured his hit single “Must Be Nice”. Jennings’ second album The Phoenix was released in August 2006. The first single, “S.E.X.”, feautures Jennings’ protégé, singer LaLa Brown

    ARTIST/EVENT: Gregory Porter / Marcus Strickland & Twi-Life

    WHERE: CELEBRATE BROOKLYN BANDSHELL

9th Street & Prospect Park West

    GENRE: Jazz, Jazz vocalist

DESCRIPTION: The Brooklyn based singer GREGORY PORTER showcases “outstanding original songs, erudite lyrics and social comment, top drawer musicianship and improvisation, and a voice to die for” (Jazz Wise)—qualities that led l’Express to call him “the next great voice in jazz.” Porter’s career began when he moved to Bed Stuy in 2004 and began playing at neighborhood spots, including his brother’s restaurant Bread Stuy, where he was a chef, with some of the musicians who would eventually become his touring band. He released two albums Motéma, Water (2010) and Be Good (2012), before signing with Blue Note Records (under Universal Music Group). His Blue Note debut, Liquid Spirit, produced by Brian Bacchus, came out in 2013 and won the 2014 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album. His hotly anticipated follow up, Take Me to The Alley, arrived in early May.

Multi-reedist and BRIC JazzFest alum MARCUS STRICKLAND and his electrifying band TWI-LIFE set the tone. The songs on Strickland’s recent Blue Note/Revive debut Nihil Novi, produced by Meshell Ndegeocello and released earlier this year, offer an “array of styles, harmonic textures, and dynamics, and reveal his preoccupation with hip-hop beatmaking.” (AllMusic)

ARTIST/EVENT: Unknown Mortal Orchestra / Empress Of

    WHERE: Central Park SummerStage

72 St & Central Park West

    GENRE: Eclectic,Electronic,Pop

DESCRIPTION: The threads of our past never unravel, they hover like invisible webs, occasionally glistening due to a sly angle of the sun. On Multi-Love, Unknown Mortal Orchestra frontman and multi-instrumentalist Ruban Nielson reflects on relationships: airy, humid longing, loss, the geometry of desire that occurs when three people align. Where Nielson addressed the pain of being alone on II, Multi-Love takes on the complications of being together. Multi-Love adds dimensions to the band’s already kaleidoscopic approach, with Nielson exploring a newfound appreciation for synthesizers. The new songs channel with the spirit of psych innovators without ignoring the last 40 years of music, forming a flowing, cohesive whole that reflects restless creativity. Cosmic escapes and disco rhythms speak to developing new vocabulary, while Nielson’s vocals reach powerful new heights. “It felt good to be rebelling against the typical view of what an artists is today, a curator,” he says. “It’s more about being someone who makes things happen in concrete ways. Building old synthesizers and bringing them back to life, creating sounds that aren’t quite like anyone else’s. I think that’s much more subversive.” While legions of artists show fidelity to the roots of psychedelia, Unknown Mortal Orchestra shares the rare quality that makes the genre’s touchstones so vital, constant exploration.

    Empress Of
While in college Lorely Rodriguez, aka Empress Of, began sketching out a new song idea everyday, making a scrappy home-recording, and posting 1-minute YouTube videos she called “colorminutes”—little snippets of her gorgeous, ethereal pop songs set to different color screens. The mysteriousness intrigued certain corners of the underground music world and on blogs.

Their 1990s masterpieces Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space) and Blowout Comb--a love letter to Fort Greene which Pitchfork said, “made a proto-crate-digging approach feel completely organic, and integrated with their broader goal of deepening rap’s connection to music history”--remain two of rap’s greatest and most original records. Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler, Mary Ann “Ladybug Mecca” Vieira and Craig “Doodlebug” Irving have reunited, and are backed here by a full band.

The classic Bronx duo CAMP LO have the opening honors. Comprised of Sonny Cheeba and Geechi Suede, the group formed in 1995 and have produced a steady stream of critically acclaimed (if publicly underappreciated) music ever since, collaborating along the way with the likes of De La Soul, Aesop Rock, Will Smith, and Pete Rock along the way. WHERE: Central Park SummerStage

72 St & Central Park West

    GENRE: Hip Hop

DESCRIPTION: Nice & Smooth was an East Coast hip hop duo from New York that consists of Greg Nice (Greg Mays) and Smooth B (Daryl Barnes). The duo released four albums from the late 1980s to the mid 1990s.

Bahamadia Born Antonia’ Reed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Bahamadia was first introduced to Hip Hop culture as a DJ spinning at local house parties in the 80’s. A writer at heart, Bahamadia honed her skills as a poet and emcee with superior rhyme and delivery skills. Her work has been featured in electronic, progressive, jazz and experimental genres. Bahamadia’s eclecticism secured her rise to prominence on the hip hop and world music scene in the 90’s. In 1993 her regional hit, funk vibe (co-produced by DJ Ran of Power 99) caught the attention of G.U.R.U of the iconic rap duo Gangstarr. Bahamadia became his protégé and she was soon signed to his Ill Kid Productions where she recorded her follow-up single, Total Wreck which led to a recording deal with Chrysalis/Emi/Capital Records. In 1995 Uknowhowwedo the lead single to her classic debut Kollage was released. Kollage LP followed in 1996 and solidified Bahamadia’s place in world music’s history as the premier emcee for females in hip hop culture globally. Bahamadia returned to recording with appearances on golden era standards with artists such as Rah Digga, Talib Kweli, Jedi Mind Tricks, Lauryn Hill, The Roots, and more. In Spring 2013 Bahamadia released her self-produced project titled Dialed Up. Dialed Up is the first ever music project created entirely on a handheld mobile device (smart phone) AND recorded in a car—further evidence to support why Bahamadia is deemed a highly respected artistic visionary and forerunner of tomorrow’s music. Currently Bahamadia is finalizing her next project titled Here; slated for 2016 release on her B-Girl Records LLC imprint. She is also a creative ambassador and an active member on the Universal Hip Hop Museum’s Women’s Advisory Board.

    Doug E. Fresh
The first human beatbox in the rap world, and still the best of all time, Doug E. Fresh amazed audiences with his note-perfect imitations of drum machines, effects, and often large samples of hip-hop classics. Fresh was born Doug E. Davis in Barbados, and his first appearance came in 1983 on a single for Spotlight called “Pass the Budda,” with Spoonie Gee and DJ Spivey. His introduction to most hip-hop fans, though, came one year later with his astonishing performance in Beat Street behind the Treacherous Three. His first solo features also came in 1984, with “Just Having Fun,” waxed for Enjoy, and “Original Human Beatbox” for Vinentertainment. By 1985, Fresh was one of the biggest names in rap music, and his first single for Reality, “The Show/La Di Da Di,” became a hip-hop classic. It was recorded with his Get Fresh Crew, including MC Ricky D (only later to gain fame as Slick Rick), along with Barry Bee and Chill Will.

SUBSCRIPTION INFO: Every person on this list opted in manually some time over the past 10 years, (or perhaps was signed up by a friend before we instituted the two-step confirmation process). If you don't recall signing up, or do not wish to receive these mailings, I suggest that there's no need to get nasty, or complain to government officials. (It's just an email!) Please simply use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of this email, OR email me directly (hit reply), and I'll personally remove you from future mailings. If you request removal, and it has to do with your dissatisfaction with the content of the emails themselves, please do let me know so I can improve the mailings for you and for others.
